Gábor Iklódy addressed the UN Human Rights Council session and held talks with High Commissioner for Human Rights | | | On March 3, Political Director Gábor Iklódy took part in and addressed the 13th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In his contribution the State Secretary emphasised Hungary’s commitment to human rights, especially minority rights. As a Member State of the highest-level human rights body of the United Nations, we strive to advance the effective implementation of human rights – he added. Mr Iklódy also met Ms Navanethem Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. He informed the High Commissioner that the founding deeds of the endowment establishing the Budapest-based Genocide Prevention Centre initiated by the Hungarian government would be signed still in March 2010. The State Secretary at the same time thanked the High Commissioner’s office for supporting the concept of establishing the Centre. At the opening of the accompanying event “Central-European Roma Integration Strategy: best practices in the Visegrad Cooperation countries”, Mr Iklódy pointed out that Hungary – as current President of the Visegrad Four group – regards as a priority strengthening cooperation between Member States on advancing Roma social integration. He also reported on Hungarian government measures in this field. In connection with the event, the State Secretary – together with Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva – opened the exhibition presenting the works of Roma fine artists which were given space in the UN Geneva headquarters.
